You should take acting classes
This is exactly what an executive said to me as we came out of a meeting. I thought he was kidding. He was not.
Many successful business leaders and executives have credited their acting training with helping them succeed in their careers. This exec thought it could benefit me as well.
One reason why acting classes can be beneficial for professionals is that they help to develop key communication and interpersonal skills. Through exercises like improvisation and scene work, actors learn to listen closely to their scene partners, respond authentically to their emotions, and effectively convey their own thoughts and feelings. These skills are highly transferable to the workplace, where effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential for success.

Another reason why acting classes can be valuable for professionals is that they help to build confidence and presence. By practicing performing in front of others, actors learn to overcome stage fright, project their voice, and engage with their audience. These skills can be applied to a range of professional situations, from public speaking to pitching ideas to colleagues and clients.
Furthermore, acting classes can help professionals to develop their emotional intelligence and empathy. Through playing different characters and exploring different emotional states, actors learn to understand and relate to others on a deeper level. This can be valuable in a range of professional settings, from leading teams to negotiating deals.
The reason this executive suggested acting classes for me was that he thought I could improve my poker face. He noticed that my eyebrows would crinkle when I didn’t agree with something or that my eyes had the slightest roll. While it was tough to hear, I really appreciated his candor. I did eventually take an acting class and not only was it fun but I believe it helped .
So, if you’re considering taking acting classes, know that you’re not alone! Many successful professionals have recognized the value that acting training can bring to their careers. Whether you’re looking to build your communication skills, boost your confidence, or develop your emotional intelligence, acting classes can be a fun and rewarding way to achieve your goals.
