“The Lipstick Lesson”

Stepping Up to the Podium

I’d been invited to speak at an internal company event, my audience eagerly awaiting insights and stories. Upon arrival, I met with the organizers, who ensured everything was set up to my liking. We went over the final details, and I took a moment to ground myself, ready to make an impact.

The talk went off perfectly—audience engagement, thunderous applause, and a warm post-presentation chat with the organizers. They expressed their gratitude and appreciation, making me feel like my words had truly resonated. Feeling good, I headed to my car, reflecting on the success of the day. But just before driving off, I glanced in the mirror and froze. There it was: a huge glob of lipstick on my teeth. Had it been there the entire time? Did the organizers notice but choose to stay silent? Questions flooded my mind: Why didn’t they mention it? Were they not looking out for me? Isn’t that what we’re supposed to do for one another

The Aftermath

Sitting in my car, what had been a small beauty blunder spiraled into a reflection on the dynamics of professional support. It seemed minor, but it cut deeper when I thought about it. As women (and colleagues!), we’re often seen as each other’s support systems. And something as small as a word about lipstick could have been a quick save rather than a post-talk surprise.

Sometimes, the little things we notice about others are worth pointing out, even if they’re awkward. Whether it’s a slip of lipstick or an off-track presentation slide, a quick, discreet mention can build trust and reinforce that we’ve got each other’s backs. Small gestures can make a big difference in creating a truly supportive workplace.
