Lessons from my TEDx journey

My TEDx Journey: Embracing Vulnerability

Preparing for this experience has been transformative, pushing me to explore deeper layers of myself in ways I didn’t expect. Here are some of the profound lessons I’ve learned along the way:

  1. Your Tribe is Your Most Valuable Asset

Preparing for TEDx has reinforced the importance of surrounding myself with a supportive network. Sharing ideas, receiving honest feedback, and celebrating milestones together has been invaluable. One truth stands out: if you ask for feedback, you will get it—and sometimes, it’s hard to hear. This is why it’s crucial to have people in your circle who will tell you the truth in love.

  1. You Are the Magic

My talk centers on my work in youth mentoring (The ripple effect of mentoring). Initially, my talk was filled with stats and research, devoid of personal elements. A dear colleague pointed this out, and though I hesitated, believing it wasn’t about me, she encouraged me to infuse more of myself into the talk. This advice transformed both the presentation and me, making it the most personal thing I’ve ever shared.

  1. The Strength in Vulnerability

Opening up and sharing my personal stories has been both challenging and liberating. I’ve discovered that vulnerability, though incredibly hard, is a bridge that connects us on a human level, fostering trust and authenticity. This process unearthed stories I had repressed, but if my story allows even one person to feel seen, the discomfort is worth it.

  1. I am living the ripple effect of mentoring.

Reflecting on my path, I realize how pivotal one mentor, in particular, has been in shaping my career and personal growth. Her guidance not only steered my path but also inspired me to pay it forward by mentoring others. This talk reinforces that I am doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing.

  1. I Can Do Hard Things

Make no mistake—this journey has been hard. I’ve practiced tirelessly, locked myself in a hotel for a weekend to memorize my talk, received coaching, taken an improv class, and reread Brené Brown’s works. Yet, it remains viscerally challenging. I’ve embraced the power of breathwork to regulate my emotions and fear. It will be hard, but I can and will do it.

See you on the other side! 🚀
