We just weren’t prepared and were focused on the wrong things.
I worked on Windows Mobile in 2008-2009. This picture represents an outcome of which we couldn’t have conceived and a world in which we could not compete . We were almost 100% focused on competing with RIM. This is an amazing case study of strategy . Google/Android – monetize search by giving away the OS to the OEMs. Apple – monetize the marketplace/hardware/experience with proprietary OS and hardware. Windows – monetize the software by charging OEM for software. Fascinating that it happened in less than 10 years.
Despite the outcome, I learned so much during that time.
